Valeriu Cazacevschi
Moldova-born. Wexford-based.
Valeriu Cazacevschi is a Moldova-born sculptor and visual artist based in Wexford, Ireland. He began a sustained artistic practice in 2013, developing an early interest in drawing alongside the study of photography and art history.
His background in construction gave him practical experience with wood, stone, plaster and metal. Work in healthcare brought a different perspective: an attention to vulnerability, fear, ageing, happiness and hope. Both experiences inform his approach to the human figure.
Sculpture is central to his practice, alongside painting and drawing. Elongation, fragmentation and changes of proportion allow a body or face to carry emotional weight. His interest in abstraction and surrealism sits alongside his study of artists including Constantin Brâncuși, Alberto Giacometti and Salvador Dalí.
His selected exhibition history includes the Royal Hibernian Academy in Dublin, Greenacres Gallery in Wexford and the Embassy of Moldova in Ireland. ITACA magazine devoted the illustrations of its 39th issue to his work in 2022, and he featured on Radio Moldova’s Vocile Diasporei in November 2025.
Practice
The figure provides a starting point rather than a fixed model. A stretched limb, a shortened torso or an isolated head changes how a body occupies space. Across the sculptures, texture and proportion become ways of approaching the human experiences described in Valeriu’s practice: vulnerability, fear and ageing, but also happiness and hope.
Material is part of that enquiry. His experience of working with wood, plaster, stone and metal informs a practice that moves between modelling, construction and abstraction. Drawing and painting extend this attention to the body, composition and surface. His study of art history, philosophy and human behaviour continues alongside the making of new work.
